ABSTRACT: An investigation of the equatorial F region ionospheric irregularities is carried out based on detailed analysis of ionograms from the magnetic equatorial station, Fortaleza, Brazil, and from the low latitude station, Cachoeira Paulista, Brazil, together with geoestationary satellite signal scintillation data collected at Natal, Brazil. We have used the data from the year 1978. Range type spread F was observed with higher occurrence rate between 19:00 and 00:00 LT, with a seasonal maximu during the Southern Hemisphere summer and equinoctial months, whereas the frequency type spread F presents higher occurrence rate in the post midnight hours with seasonal maximum in winter months. The range type spread F occurrence is found to be closely related to the vertical movement o f the F layer near sunset, and the irregularities giving rise to the range type spread F seems to be associated with plasma depleted regions, or plasma bubbles, generated from growth of the collisional Rayleigh-Taylor type plasma instability in the equatorial ionosphere following the sunset. The plasma bubbles over the magnetic equator ocurs in field aligned tubular forms extending hundreds of kilometers into the low latitude ionosphere and is associated with vertical velocities 50 m/s up to 300 m/s. |
